Road Trip Getaway (part 1)

After a LONG drought of vacations together, Jeff and I were hoping to plan a getaway for just the two of us some time during the fall. But with the uncertainty of Covid and travel restrictions, we struggled to come up with any good trip ideas that wouldn't cause potential delays and constraints amidst our busy fall schedule. We eventually decided that a Texas road trip would provide the greatest flexibility for us, so we planned for a few days away in the Austin area followed by a few more days in east Texas. It wasn't our typical getaway nor ideal for our preferences, but we were happy to plan some dedicated time together while my parents would come stay with the kids for us.

No sooner had I booked the trip, we found out about a conflict with Kaitlynn's cheer squad that we simply couldn't miss. So, we made some calls and adjusted our plans to accommodate a 2-part road trip with an overnight visit back to Katy in between. That's just how it goes these days with our hectic schedules and busy kids! In fact, our schedules were so insane that it took 6 pages (typed!) of instructions, reminders, and checklists to prepare my parents for the 6 days we would be away. Yikes!

Writing it all down made me realize how chaotic our lives had been lately with nonstop carpools, long work days, and endless sports activities and practices. No wonder we were so ready for a break! Thank goodness my parents were willing to step in. We gave them an overview of the daily schedules and checklists, and then Jeff and I headed out for the first stop on our road trip. We had reserved an AirBnb property in a beautiful community in the Lake Travis area of Austin, and we even rented a golf cart to enjoy the 16 miles of trails throughout the community. We were blown away by the beauty of the area and the gorgeous views from our balcony. With the most beautiful weather of the season, we spent several days exploring the area by golf cart, soaking in the sun and stunning views, and reconnecting with the much-needed time together. It was a perfect few days that far exceeded our expectations!

Jeff and I enjoyed every moment of our time in the Austin area, and we truly fell in love with the lake community near Lake Travis. We felt truly rejuvenated after our short getaway, but it was time for us to return back to Katy for a quick overnight stop back home. Little did we know that this first half of our road trip getaway would lead to a new chapter for our family down the road.
